Answer:
Right after your period and at the same time each month. If you have irregular periods, you should do the self-exam on the same day of every month. See document on breast lump.

What is the best way to examine breasts for lumps?

Answer:
See the picture above on breast self-examination. Be on the lookout for a lump that stands out, nipple discharge, changes in skin texture, unusual tenderness, and differences from the last time you checked. The American Cancer Society distributes booklets demonstrating the proper technique for self-breast exam as well. (see cancer - support group).

Answer:
The areas around the nipple and in the armpit are most commonly missed during a breast self-examination.

Monthly breast self-exams should always include: visual inspection (with and without a mirror) to note any changes in contour or texture; and manual inspection in standing and reclining positions to note any unusual lumps or thicknesses.
