Bladder Cancer Prevention

Since we do not know what exactly causes bladder cancer, there is no certain way to prevent it.

Avoiding risk factors whenever possible is the best alternative.

Smoking and Bladder Cancer Prevention

Since smoking doubles one's risk of getting bladder cancer, avoiding tobacco may prevent at least half the deaths that result from bladder cancer

Bladder Cancer Prevention and chemicals

If you work with a class of chemicals called aromatic amines, be sure to follow good work safety practices. Industries where these chemicals are commonly used include the makers of rubber, leather, printing materials, textiles, and paint products.

Fluids and Bladder Cancer Prevention

A recent study found that drinking plenty of fluids can lower a person's risk of developing bladder cancer. The researchers’ explanation was that the extra fluid increases urine production, causing people to empty their bladders more often. This dilutes any cancer-causing substances that might be present in the urine, and limits the time that such chemicals will remain in contact with bladder cells. In the study, people who drank at least 11 cups of fluids a day were half as likely to develop bladder cancer as people who drank fewer than 6 cups per day.

Bladder Cancer Prevention and diet

Recent studies have suggested that broccoli (broccoli sprouts in particular) and cauliflower can lower the risk of bladder cancer. Researchers have suggested this is due to a compound in these vegetables that increases an enzyme called sulforaphane in the body. This enzyme helps protect cells and prevents them from becoming malignant.
